Kids these days are bombarded by technology, information overload, and a lack of physical activity which can drastically effect School Performance. What we end up with is kids that are hyperactive, unfocused, and undisciplined, and that directly impacts their school performance. Whether it is bad behavior, bad grades, or a combination of the two, parents and teachers struggle for ways to cope and improve the performance of these overstimulated kids. Sadly, medication becomes the easy answer for some of these children, but there are other options. Martial arts can and do improve academic performance and can also improve general behavior as well.

A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics in 2014 (www.jpeds.com) looked at the connection between physical health and brain health, especially related to cardiorespiratory capacity and motor ability. That study, which was three years long and included over two thousand school-aged children, found that as physical health increased, so did brain health. The healthier kids saw a dramatic increase in school performance including an increase in grades and overall good behavior.

Classes start with a bow to the instructor. Students bow to one another before learning techniques and sparring or practicing moves. They bow when they are finished. They learn to quietly wait their turn. They learn that violence is not the answer to problems. All of these skills are important, not only during training but in the classroom and beyond. Students will be able to sit quietly in their seats without fidgeting. They will respect their teachers and their peers. They will be able to manage themselves without having to be aggressive and without becoming a bully but also will not have to become a victim.

 

How Old Should a Martial Arts Student Be?

 

While every gym has a different minimum age, six is the youngest that is recommended by most experts. Dr. Mimi Johnson suggests that by this age there is more than enough muscle control to allow for safe punching, kicking, twisting, and turning during a martial arts class (www.parenting.com). A quality gyms will teach the kids much more than just punching and kicking and the skills that children can learn, aside from the confidence to protect themselves, will last a lifetime. Often parents are concerned that their child isn’t ready for Martial Arts but Martial arts training might also be the key to helping them to learn balance and focus as well.
